Halloween, without the plastic

The Halloween Collection together — BOO, the two little ghosts, the pumpkin and grimoire set, the spellbook stacks and the pointillist pumpkin, hand-poured and hand-painted

Most Halloween decorating is done in plastic. It goes up in the second week of October, it looks like everyone else's, and by the first week of November it is in a bin bag in a cupboard.

We wanted to make the other kind. Things you would still be happy to see on a shelf in the middle of November, when the pumpkins outside have gone soft and nobody is thinking about ghosts any more.

Three small ghosts

The newest pieces are the smallest. BOO is a round white ghost with the word hand-lettered across the front in black — the letters are painted one at a time, which is why the O's are never quite twins.

Then there are two little ghosts who are busy with something else. One is sitting in a pumpkin, which comes in orange or red. The other is reading, and comes in pink or white.

People consistently expect these to be bigger than they are. They are palm-sized. That is the point of them: a ghost on a windowsill, not a centrepiece.

Spellbooks, and a hand reaching over them

Our Spooky Books are a stack of spellbooks in wax — Spooky Spells, Curses and Potions, with a skeletal hand coming over the top. They are hand-poured first, then hand-painted, which is why the lettering is slightly different on every one.

They sit next to real books very happily, which is the joke, and the reason people tend to buy two.

The pumpkin and the grimoires

The Pumpkin & Grimoire Set pairs a small waxed pumpkin with a stack of spellbooks. Two pieces, each on its own wick, sold together because they look better that way than either does alone.

There are two versions. The plain set has the grimoires sealed in gold. The spooky set has them lettered — Spooky Spells, Curses, Potions — with a skeletal hand over the top. Same price either way; pick whichever suits the shelf.

The one that isn't really Halloween at all

Citrouille Pointilliste — pointillist pumpkin — is a palm-sized pumpkin painted one dot at a time, by hand. It takes a long time and there is no way to speed it up, which is why it is a limited run.

It is the piece we would keep out longest. There is nothing spooky about it. Once the 31st has been and gone it simply looks like a small painted pumpkin, and it stays on the shelf well past the point where anything orange and plastic has been put away.

They are made to be looked at

Every piece in this collection is hand-painted, and that is the reason we ask you to treat them as decorative rather than as candles to burn down. The paint is on the outside; burning takes it away, and takes the piece with it.

They all have a wick, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. But we would rather say plainly what we think: these were made to be looked at. Keep them out of reach of children and pets, and away from anything that gets warm — a sunny windowsill in October is fine, a radiator shelf is not.

If you want something to actually burn, our jarred Café Collection is made for it, and we would point you there instead.

Ordering in time

Everything is made to order and hand-painted, which is the good part and also the slow part. Allow two working days before it is sent, then tracked delivery on top. If you want something on a shelf before the 31st, order with a bit of room rather than in the last week of October. We would rather tell you that now than disappoint you later.
